About This Calculation
The Physiology of Athletic Fluid Balance
Thermoregulation during physical exercise relies predominantly on the evaporation of sweat from the skin surface. When fluid losses exceed 2% of total body mass, aerobic capacity, mental processing velocity, and neuromuscular power begin to decline. To achieve complete fluid re-equilibration post-exercise, athletes must consume 125% to 150% of the net volume lost to account for continued urinary loss and sweating.
