About This Calculation

Why Heart Rate Reserve Outperforms Simple Age Formulas

Traditional formulas such as 220 - Age fail to account for aerobic conditioning. Two 30-year-old athletes with resting heart rates of 45 bpm and 75 bpm possess dramatically distinct circulatory capacities. The Karvonen formula incorporates Resting Heart Rate (HRrest) to calculate true Heart Rate Reserve (HRR = HRmax - HRrest), producing accurate physiological training zones.

Limitations & Context Cardiovascular drift, caffeine, ambient temperature, sleep deprivation, and cardiac medications will influence daily heart rate responses.
