What is Submaximal 1RM Testing?
One-repetition maximum (1RM) represents the peak gravitational load an athlete can move through a full range of motion with standard biomechanical technique. Direct 1RM testing presents injury risk and substantial neuromuscular fatigue. Submaximal estimations extrapolate true maximal capacity from repetitions performed to near-volitional failure (RPE 9–10) within the optimal 2–10 repetition window.
Why Consensus Range Matters
No single mathematical formula accurately predicts capacity across all individuals. The Epley formula is often well-calibrated for high-repetition efforts, while Brzycki excels in the 3–6 repetition band.
